Vegan Leather Care 101

Learn to care for your vegan leather handbags just as much as you care for the environment. A little TLC goes a long way.

  • My vegan leather handbag has started to crack and peel! What is the cause and how do I stop this?

The sun and vegan leather don’t get along very well. One of the most common reason for cracks appearing is prolonged exposure to the sun. The UVB rays from the sun affect the molecular structure of vegan leather, causing the compounds to break very easily, which results in cracks on the surface. To ensure that your bag doesn’t get chaffed over a period of time, try your best not to leave it exposed to the sun for long durations of time.

  • I barely take my handbag out in the sun. Why are cracks still appearing?

Another reason for your handbag cracking is the quality of the vegan leather used. If you decide to buy vegan leather that is cheap and that’s not reinforced with natural fibers, such as cotton, then it will crack even when it is not exposed to the sun! This is because the fabric is going to be affected by changes in temperature, that’s why most vegan leather you are going to buy is probably going to contain either synthetic or natural fibers to support the structure.

  • Is there no way to prevent the cracking?

With a little TLC, you can maintain your vegan leather handbags and keep them looking brand new. There are many oils that are going to prevent faux leather from cracking, when they are absorbed by the fabric, they are simply going to prevent damaging sun rays from reaching weak layers of your handbag and cracking the texture. Using these oils will give an added protection and a very nice look to your faux leather clothing and furniture. The best oil to use for maintaining and preventing cracks on your faux leather is baby oil. This may sound strange but if you think about it, you will find some sense in this idea. Baby oil is made to protect the weak and fragile skin of babies, and this is the same thing we are looking for when applying it to faux leather fabrics, it is going to create a protective layer which is going to prevent damaging temperatures and sun rays from cracking the surface.

  • How do I store my vegan leather handbags?

You can store your faux leather handbag, but if you are going to do it for long a period of time, you need to apply baby oil first, and you should repeat this at least once a year. You should also avoid storing it in humid, sunny, or very hot places (you must avoid steam as much as possible, like a kitchen or a garden house). One more thing, you must not store it empty, in other terms, it should be filled with paper or some cotton in order not to lose its shape and get wrinkled.

  • Can I clean my vegan leather handbag?

Yes, you may. Unlike actual leather, vegan leather can be exposed to water. But there is trick to it. The safest bet is to clean your bag with a damp cloth, or at most, hand wash it. Heat will ruin your bag so no using the dryer or ironing. Definitely no sun drying. Dry cleaning is also generally a no-no, as the chemicals used can cause stiffness and discoloration.
